Welcome in Darijah! | Audio Sample of Moroccan Dialect

Posted by Mourad Diouri On February - 16 - 2009

About

This podcast was produced to be published in the latest edition of Mastering Arabic(2009), written by Jane Wightwick and Mahmoud Gaafar.

The podcast is an audio sample of the dialect representative of Morocco (specifically the northern region). According to Wightwick and Gaafar, this is to give the learner a taste of how the different spoken dialects sound, in contrast to the more standard Arabic taught in the rest of the course.

Each unit of the new edition will end with a feature focusing on a different region of the Arabic-speaking world. Namely, the following dialects will be included:

  1. Syrian
  2. Lebanese
  3. Sudanese
  4. Saudi
  5. Moroccan
  6. Algerian
  7. Tunisian
  8. Yemeni
  9. Jordanian/Palestinian
  10. Libyan
  11. Iraqi

Moroccan Arabic (also known as Darija, الدارجة) is the variety of Arabic spoken in the Arabic-speaking areas of Morocco, as opposed to the official communications of government and other public bodies which use Modern Standard Arabic, as is the case in most Arabic-speaking countries, while a mixture of French and Moroccan Arabic is used in Business. It is within the Maghrebi Arabicdialect continuum.

I found the Moroccan dialect completely fascinating! I had to listen a couple of times as the unfamiliar elements took a while to sink in. The diction is wonderfully clear and it’s very helpful to have the written text to follow so that one can hear the differences between expected and actual pronunciation. Thanks so much! Lis

This is excellent, albeit short. It seems like a good idea for those behind Mastering Arabic to include examples of different dialects, but this sample clearly illustrates the need for a hefty publication on Moroccon dialect. Is there one? If so, would it yu3jibnaa? I’d like to know.

@Jones.Marc: Dear Marc, Thanks for the feedback. There are a few excellent publications from Georgetown. See the shared bookmarks in the “Further Resources” tab . Some books are available on limited preview from Google Book Search.

This podcast is a great intro to a dialect that is quite new to me. The vocabulary is useful and I really like the expressions. It is neat to have the scribd tool to print out the list. The podcast sounds clear, as ever, and the speed is just right. Awesome!
Btw Marc, the Lonely Planet has a Morrocan Arabic phrasebook. I think I saw one in Blackwells and otherwise check on Amazon.

I listened to your introduction which I liked very much. It is clear and gives a nice flavour of the dialect.
I do hope that if some of our students go to Morocco you will be able to give them an introduction to the dialect focusing on the major differences. One of these came out clearly in your intro. the prefix ka/ or ki in the front of present tense verbs.
